CIA Funding and Manipulation of the U.S. News Media Operation Mockingbird was a secret Central Intelligence Agency campaign to influence domestic and foreign media beginning in the 1950s.
According to the Congress report published in 1976:
“The CIA currently maintains a network of several hundred foreign individuals around the world who provide intelligence for the CIA and at times attempt to influence opinion through the use of covert propaganda. These individuals provide the CIA with direct access to a large number of newspapers and periodicals, scores of press services and news agencies, radio and television stations, commercial book publishers, and other foreign media outlets.”

In other words, it might seem like the media offers a wide variety of choices to consumers, but media consolidation over the years has actually given way to an illusion of choice.

Actually most of the people and organizations you mention have consistently fought against the kind of media consolidation described above and to increase citizen participation in our society. So, ya, they are heroes.
DeleteIn contrast, most of the media personalities that bray about feminazies, and the "democrat" party, and such happen to actually work for these media monopolies and act as flaks for their interests.
Compare, for example, the position of media matters on "net neutrality" versus some one like Rush or the nitwits on FOX. How long to you think websites like this would last when the big six are given the ability to treat the web like personal property?
So, sometimes you actually need government regulation to insure access to media and free speech rights, and repeating a mantra about small governments only furthers the right wing agenda. Every leap in media consolidation described above has occurred AFTER an episode of media deregulation.

ReplyDeleteWhy do people waste their time with these silly arguments? Didn't you learn in school that when you write a paper and you use other people's information, you must note the source? My point being is that every piece of information out there is subjective, as the writer has gathered his/her information from other sources to support their story. It's their job to convince you that their story is accurate and credible.
